Glasgow
Overview
Glasgow is the largest city of Scotland with a population of 6,12,000. It is known as the ‘Sound City’ of Scotland because of the many music bands that originated there. Glasgow is the seat of culture: being host to about 20 museums and art galleries and concert halls. The Scottish Triad – Ballet, Opera and Royal Scottish National Orchestra are headquartered in Glasgow. The most renowned and revered architect of the city is Charles Rennie Mackintosh whose unique work can be seen around the city. The Burrell Collection is a Mecca for culture lovers.

At one time, Glasgow was constructing locomotives, weaving carpets and building ships, now the shipyards and heavy industries have almost disappeared, the warehouses have now become fashionable residences of the ‘Merchant City’. The city is home to several indoor malls like Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, St. Enoch Centre. The most pedestrianised shopping thoroughfares of the city are Sauchiehall Street, Argyll Street and Buchanan Street.

It takes an hour by flight from London to reach Glasgow. The city is 6 hours from London and 45 minutes from Edinburgh by rail. Coach service is available from London Victoria station to Buchanan station and it takes little more than 8 hours.
